Selenium in the Diet

How Functional Dairy Can Boost Health & Argentina’s Strategic Role in a European Project

Published an article, El selenio en la dieta: cómo los lácteos funcionales pueden mejorar la salud y qué rol cumple Argentina en un proyecto europeo”

Selenium is an essential micronutrient with antioxidant and immune-modulating properties. However, due to soil depletion and modern farming practices, many populations suffer from suboptimal selenium intake. Functional dairy products—those enriched with selenium—offer a promising solution to bridge this nutritional gap.

Argentina is playing a pivotal role in the European project Se4All (Selenium for All), which seeks to develop dairy products with enhanced selenium concentration and bioavailability. The country’s strong dairy sector, experienced research institutions (INTA, INTI, UNL), and tradition in milk processing position it as a key partner in scaling up both the science and production of Se-enriched dairy.

This international recognition has been highlighted by the Argentine agro-media outlet Aire Agro, which recently published an article, “El selenio en la dieta: cómo los lácteos funcionales pueden mejorar la salud y qué rol cumple Argentina en un proyecto europeo”. The feature underscores how Se4All bridges European and Latin American expertise to deliver healthier food systems.

Through biofortified feed, feeding trials, analytic characterization, and consumer studies, Se4All demonstrates how Argentina can contribute to healthier food systems—not just locally but across Latin America and Europe.
